- The Lilly Gray Mystery-
By: Honey Morales
This gravestone has the baffling inscription, "Lilly E. Gray, Victim of the Beast 666." Neither the inscription nor the fact that nobody can explain what it means is any less perplexing.
While the remainder of the gravestone demonstrates thoughtful design and construction, this one aspect sticks out as inherently cruel. It's been over half a century since Lilly's death, and nobody still knows what the inscription indicates.
There's also the theory that Lilly was a part of Aleister Crowley's Salt Lake City cult. In the early 20th century, Crowley gained notoriety as a dangerous occultist. In the views of her husband or other survivors, Lilly may have been a victim of Crowley, and the fact that he has been described as "the Beast 666" lends credence to this hypothesis.
A car accident on Utah's infamous Route 666 “The Devil's Highway” has been cited as the cause of Lilly's death. The highway was infamous for more than just its moniker; its lonely parts were also the scene of a disproportionate number of fatal car accidents. Since Lilly may have used the highway during the time she was supposedly residing in Utah, we can't rule out the possibility entirely.
Lillian "Lilly" E. Gray, who was laid to rest in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, has become something of an urban legend among Utah youth throughout the decades after her burial there.
Lilly E. Gray and the significance of the Victim of the Beast 666 inscription on her tombstone will remain a mystery until we learn more.
